What Are Trans Fats?

You may have heard of "trans fats" before, but did you know that they are also called "partially hydrogenated oils"? Trans fats are found in foods, and they are considered unhealthy. Working to avoid them as much as possible in your diet is a smart move. Associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and with increasing your risk of stroke and heart disease, trans fats can have a big impact on your health.

So where is this type of fat typically found? Trans fats often lurk in deep-fried foods, such as doughnuts and fries, but they can also be in foods like pizza dough and pie crust. Reading nutrition labels is the best way to be on the lookout for this type of fat. These days some foods will proclaim that they are "trans fat free" on the label. If not, you may want to take a closer look.

Watching your trans fat intake becomes easier once you get to know what foods contain these substances. The American Heart Association recommends that you get no more than 1% of your total daily calories from trans fats, so try to keep an eye out for them and work at avoiding foods that contain partially hydrogenated oils as well since they are the same thing.
